The Artemis brand philosophy is to promote holistic health for your pet by including fruits and vegetables as well as probiotics and botanicals in their food to provide a more rounded diet and promote natural healing processes. This adult dry dog food formula for small breeds is nearly, though not exactly, identical to the regular adult Fresh Mix recipe. It comes in a small kibble that is easier for small breeds to chew.

Product Overview

Review and analysis of the listed ingredients seems to indicate that this is primarily a grain-based food with a significant amount of meat. The protein is contributed primarily by chicken meal and fish meal with some fresh meat added in. Though the fresh meats appear quite high on the list, their high moisture is lost during cooking and the cooked meat would appear somewhat farther down on the list. The meals are up to 300% higher in protein that fresh meats and also contribute significantly to other nutrients as well. Fish meal that does not name a particular species sometimes comes from the by-products of fish processing. The carbohydrates are supplied by mostly whole grains with the addition of some white rice. No wheat, corn or soy products are included.

The rest of the ingredients reveal several high-quality items that provide essential nutrients in your pet’s diet. Chicken fat, flaxseed, and salmon oil all provide essential fatty acids that are important for your dog’s health and for a healthy skin and coat condition. Vitamins and minerals are also included to make sure that your dog receives complete nutrition. Minerals that are chelated to protein are more easily absorbed in the intestine. The bacterial components are probiotics that are included to encourage a robust digestive system that is characterized by the growth of the good kind of bacteria in the gut. Some people consider tomato pomace (a by-product of the processing of tomatoes) a cheap filler ingredient that may contain pesticide residues while others see it as a good source of nutrients and fiber.

This food will most likely provide good nutrition for your smaller dog, and you will be happier feeding him smaller kibble is easier for him to handle. The formula is nearly identical to the regular adult Fresh Mix, but the small breed recipe provides slightly more calories per cup of food. A healthy weight is important for smaller dogs just as much as for larger breeds. Measure your pet’s weight periodically to make sure it is appropriate. Change how much he eats if you notice an unhealthy difference in his weight since the last weigh-in.

Artemis is a California-based company. Their website contains no information on where their kibbles are manufactured.
