Product Overview
A review of the top ingredients shows that, besides the water needed for processing, the first six ingredients are meat-based protein sources. Though some are by-products and others don’t have the specific species named, these should all be considered fairly good quality sources of protein and nutrients. By-products are the parts leftover from slaughtering that may not be included in human food products but are still appropriate for use in animal feed. There are no vegetable or grain sources of protein or fillers for this product. It is expected that a moist food will have a high water content. If the moisture content were subtracted from the total weight, the protein and fat percentages that currently appear very low would rise to appropriate levels comparable to those of dry foods.
Analysis of the remaining ingredients reveal the plant-derived thickening agents carrageenan, xanthan gum and guar gum, which are used to improve the texture of the food. Two coloring sources are present, which are present most likely to improve how the food looks to the owner. Most dogs don’t care much how their food looks, only how it tastes. Some vitamin supplementation is included, though little is included of mineral supplementation, particularly of chelated minerals, which are the kind most easily absorbed by the intestines.
Puppies have a higher calorie requirement per pound of body weight than adult dogs because they are growing so fast. This food is appropriate higher in calories for the same size tray that is used for the Cesar adult foods. The feeding guidelines for your puppy are to use one-half to two trays per five pounds of body weight twice a day. You should monitor your puppy for adequate growth and weight gain and adjust how much he eats if he is growing inappropriately. The small portions that are characteristic of the brand can be very convenient if your pet is small, since you can just open the tray and place it on the floor for feeding. Clean up then involves just placing the tray in the trash or recycle bin. You may need to use multiple trays, however, for each feeding, which will increase the cost of your puppy’s daily diet and increase the amount of packaging to be disposed of.
