AAFCO Statement

Artemis 95% Chicken Canned Dog Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

Product Overview

In order to make the label claim of 95% chicken, the requirements are that, if you remove the water (or in this case chicken broth) that is added for processing, chicken must make up 95% of the rest of the ingredients. There are no added vegetables or carbohydrates (grains or potatoes) added to this food so it is virtually pure meat. Guar gum is present as a thickening agent that aids in the canning process and improves the texture of the food as it served. The vitamin and mineral supplementation mean that this food is not only high quality protein, it also has all the nutrients needed for a complete food for your dog.

Review of the nutrition information show that this product is slightly higher in moisture than most other canned dog foods. This makes the protein and fat percentages seem even lower than usual for a wet formulation. Analysis carried out on the dry weight of the ingredients, with all the moisture removed, would show these numbers to be much higher. Remember that moisture content comes not only from the water added for processing but also the high moisture content of the fresh meat itself.

As noted above, this food is noticeably lower in calories than the Fresh Mix canned foods also offered by Artemis, perhaps because the moisture content is higher. This may mean that you would have to feed a higher volume to your pet to maintain his condition, increasing the total cost.

With only four listed ingredients, this food takes a simple approach to nutrition that matches the Osopure philosophy. This food would most likely be enjoyed by your dog and would support growth or maintenance when fed appropriately to a dog in any life stage.

The Artemis Company is based in California, but the company website has no information about the place of manufacture of their products, whether dry or canned foods.
