The Acana brand tries to match the diet natural to wild canines by including lots of meat-based protein sources and combining them with vegetables and botanicals that a wild dog would eat as he forages. Meat ingredients make up 60% of the food, resulting in a high protein food that is low in carbohydrates. No grains are used in the formulation of this food. The protein sources for the Wild Prairie recipe come from both chicken and fish.

AAFCO Statement

Acana Wild Prairie is formulated to meet nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

Product Overview

Review and analysis of the ingredients reveal that chicken and fish meals provide most of the protein for this product, with the inclusion of fresh chicken and fish as well. Meat meals are made from cooked meats and have a much higher percentage of protein and nutrients than fresh meats. They also have a lower moisture content that makes easier to work with in the manufacture of a dry kibble. The fresh meat sources are of high-quality and the meat meals do not have any of the controversial preservative ethoxyquin. It is a company distinctive to state that the fresh meats are delivered daily to the plant so they are never frozen or chemically preserved.

Potatoes and peas provide the majority of the carbohydrates in this product. A very impressive list of included vegetables, along with the potatoes and peas, account for 40% of the total ingredient weight according to the package, meat and meat sources providing 60% of the weight. Various kinds of botanicals are included as well as a complete vitamin spectrum and an appropriate balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for appropriate nutrition and a beautiful coat. Mineral proteinates are minerals chelated to protein—a form that makes them more easily absorbed in the gut. Probiotics in the form of fermentation products promote the growth of healthy bacteria in your dog’s intestines to maintain optimal digestive health.

You may be asking how fat can provide 40% of the energy of this food when it is only listed as 17% by weight. Fat has a higher caloric content per gram than either protein or carbohydrates, so this apparent discrepancy should not trouble you. Watch your pet’s conditions and change how much you feed him if he changes from the lean, athletic profile of a healthy dog.

This dry kibble is a high-quality meat-based product that will give your dog complete nutrition without you having to worry about possible allergies or sensitivities to grains. Acana products are made by Champion Pet Foods, a company based in Alberta, Canada. All their dry foods are manufactured at their plant in Alberta.
