The Acana brand philosophy is to try to imitate the variety and nutrition that dogs would have consumed in the wild by including in their foods a wide range of ingredients that are purchased in the area local to the plant. Their products includes not only an abundance of meat-based protein, but also vegetables and botanicals that provide complete nutrition. This results in a high-protein food that is low in carbohydrates and completely grain-free.

AAFCO Statement

Acana Grasslands is formulated to meet nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

Product Overview

Review and analysis of the long list ingredients reveal several things. The label states that the four regional protein ingredients are lamb, walleye, free-run duck, and whole eggs. Boneless free-range lamb is listed as the most abundant ingredient by weight. Fresh meats are very high in moisture level, and this moisture disappears upon cooking. This means that the actual protein contribution by the fresh lamb is not as high as might appear, since it is followed on the list by three meat meal sources, which are concentrated and higher in protein. Drier meat meals are necessary inclusions in the manufacture of a dry kibble. The other fresh protein sources appear a bit farther down the list. All of the protein sources are stated to be free of hormones and antibiotics and the fish meal does not contain the controversial preservative ethoxyquin. According to company philosophy, all of the fresh meat sources are purchased from providers local to the plant so the owners know and trust them, and the meats are delivered fresh to the plant each day to there is no need for freezing.

Potatoes and peas are good sources of digestible carbohydrates in your dog’s diet and they help hold the food together. A truly impressive list of regionally grown vegetables and botanicals are included in this food as well as a complete vitamin and mineral spectrum. The mineral proteinates are a kind of mineral complex that is easier for your pet’s intestine to absorb. The fermentation products listed are probiotics that promote a healthy digestive system.

This is a premium food that is basically meat-based and will provide good nutrition for your pet. Feed your pet the recommended amounts according to his size and activity level and adjust how much he eats if you notice an inappropriate loss or gain of weight. Maintaining proper body weight is important for your dog’s long-term health.

Acana foods are made by the Champion Pet Foods company that is based in Alberta, Canada. All their foods are made in the plant in Alberta.
